Regulators target problem gambling

The International Association of Gaming Regulators has declared problem gambling as its main concern, replacing consumer protection.

US.- Until now, consumer protection had been the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR)’s main concern. However, the organisation has declared problem gambling as its number one priority.

The new ‘Gambling Regulation – Global Developments 2018-19’ survey showed 88% of its participants are tackling problem gambling. That is 82% more than the last time the body assessed the issue, back in 2017.

In spite of its major relevance, the survey showed fewer authorities target problem gambling directly than in 2017. The number fell from 59% to 54%.

Paul Newson, the new president of the IAGR, explained how important such a survey is for gaming regulators.

“This is a tremendous tool to promote greater information sharing and collaboration around policy development and industry supervision where we exercise similar functions and confront common issues and challenges,” he said.

“Through increased collaboration across jurisdictions we can advance efficient and effective gambling regulation,” he added. “(Also, to) inform a collective focus and priority where the risks are greatest.

The new president

Paul Newson, Trustee of the NSW Responsible Gambling Fund was announced as president at the IAGR 2019 annual conference, which took place in Jamaica from September 30 to October 3.

IAGR chose the event to unveil the appointment of Newson as President. It gathered 200 gaming regulators, advisors, law experts and industry representatives from 25 countries. The next edition of the IAGR will take place in late 2020 in Massachusetts.

Trude Felde, outgoing president and Senior Advisor at the Norwegian Gaming Authority, said: “What a year it’s been. I would like to thank the Board and our Secretary for their hard work and commitment over the 12 months. To our members, thank you for having the confidence in me to lead as President for the last year. I love engaging with the gaming regulatory community, and I hope to see you all regularly for many years to come.”
