Macau.- A woman who was among the 11 people arrested alongside Alvin Chau Cheok Wa, CEO of Suncity Group Holdings on cross-border gambling and money laundering accusations in November has received a suspended prison sentence after refusing to give a statement.
According to local media reports, the woman is a senior executive at Suncity. The Public Prosecutions Office (MP) said she had refused to provide a statement during the investigation and showed “no remorse” for her actions, prompting the judge to give her a suspended nine-month prison sentence.
Conditions for the suspended sentence include a donation of MOP5,000 (US$623) to the SAR within three months of confirmation of the sentence. According to the Criminal Code of Macau, a witness who refuses to testify without justifiable reasons may be punished with imprisonment from six months to three years.
