The woman had refused to provide a statement during the investigation following the arrest of Alvin Chau Cheok Wa on cross-border gambling and money laundering accusations.

Macau.- A woman who was among the 11 people arrested alongside Alvin Chau Cheok Wa, CEO of Suncity Group Holdings on cross-border gambling and money laundering accusations in November has received a suspended prison sentence after refusing to give a statement.

According to local media reports, the woman is a senior executive at Suncity. The Public Prosecutions Office (MP) said she had refused to provide a statement during the investigation and showed “no remorse” for her actions, prompting the judge to give her a suspended nine-month prison sentence.

Conditions for the suspended sentence include a donation of MOP5,000 (US$623) to the SAR within three months of confirmation of the sentence. According to the Criminal Code of Macau, a witness who refuses to testify without justifiable reasons may be punished with imprisonment from six months to three years.

Last December, following the arrest of Alvin Chau Cheok Wa, Suncity Group Holdings closed all of its VIP rooms in Macau.
