Tasmania and New Zealand close borders

Both countries escalate efforts to prevent the deadly virus from spreading.

New Zealand.- New Zealand and Tasmania have closed their borders to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

According to Asia Gaming Brief, partners and children of New Zealand citizens or residents are exempt from the ban, as are some health and humanitarian workers.

The decision was taken to avoid the entrance of tourists and temporary visa-holders than could be infected with COVID-19.

Most sports events have now been cancelled or postponed, and meetings of more than a hundred people are set to be banned.

Shares in SkyCity, New Zealand’s only listed casino operator, have now fallen to $1.59, its lowest point in two years, with Air New Zealand emerging from its trading yesterday at $1.54, also its lowest point.

Tasmania’s restrictions

Tasmania closed its borders to the rest of Australia as it too takes steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“We know that for some it will create disruption, but our aim is to ensure that we protect the health, wellbeing and safety of Tasmanians and we would ask people to work with us as we implement these measures and as they are managed over coming weeks,” Tasmanian Premier, Peter Gutwein, said.

Tasmania is home to Australia’s first casino, Wrest Point in Hobart, which opened in 1973.
