Tokyo 2020 President deciding who will foot the bill will be a “major challenge”

Japan.- Tokyo 2020 President Yoshirō Mori has warned International Federations of the ‘extra cost’ of postponing the Olympic Games.

According to Inside the Games, a letter was sent by Mori to the 33 Federations of Tokyo 2020 referencing the financial implications of a delay to the Games until at least the summer of 2021.

“The extra cost that will arise from this postponement is inevitable,” Mori wrote.

“Deciding who will bear these costs and how it will be done will be a major challenge.”

Mori also called upon organisers of the Games to “carry out our mission to deliver the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 next year, demonstrating that human beings have triumphed over the Coronavirus.”

The global Coronavirus pandemic has caused postponements or cancellations of major sporting events, with the Olympic Games and EURO 2020 the most notable.
