India: 9 arrested over online illegal gambling

Nine people are accused of being involved in online gambling operations during the Covid-19 lockdown.

India.- Police have carried out a raid and arrested nine people in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi. According to The Indian Express, those arrested were making illegal bets through an app called 1X Bet.

Officers said one of the men had contacted the owner of the app, who is reportedly in Russia, and offered to provide new customers in exchange for a commission. The rest of the people were employees who started to work eight months ago.

Those arrested are aged 27. During the raid, police seized money, laptops, monitors, fingerprint scanners, 30 mobile phones, 400 SIM cards, a car and a motorbike. Police said those involved in the operation had programmed the application in such a manner that they could choose the winner. 

A few weeks ago, police arrested 11 people in two raids in the Patrapur area in Ganjam district where two illegal gambling dens were operating.

According to police, one of the raids ended with six people arrested for illegal gambling. During the bust, police seized a total of Rs18,260. In the second raid, five gamblers were arrested and Rs9,300 was seized.
