Virginia subcommittee approves sports betting
A subcommittee voted for Virginia to legalise online sports betting and give regulatory power to the state’s Lottery.
US.- Some states remain undecided and continue to debate the segment. However, Virginia took a step further towards sports betting legalisation last Thursday.
A subcommittee of the Senate Committee on General Laws and Technology approved a recent proposal. Sen. Jeremy McPike’s bill got some support and may reach the floor soon.
The proposed legislation would have Virginia legalise online sports betting on both pro and collegiate levels. Moreover, it would give the power over the industry to the state Lottery
Casino legislation
The Virginia casino industry could soon be a reality as a major push for it seems to be on a successful path. Moreover, Governor Ralph Northam advanced he’s “open” to legalise casinos in the state if done correctly.
“It’s clear that there’s going to be a robust discussion in the General Assembly this year regarding legalized gaming. There are several proposals on the table. Our legislators are going to thoroughly vet them,” Northam said. “My philosophy is Virginia needs to be very thoughtful in its approach. If we’re going to expand gambling, we need to do it responsibly.”
The top proposal
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) seem to have finally reached their goal. According to chief Richard Sneed, they have come to an agreement with the state of Virginia to develop a casino.
The venue would include an outdoor concert venue, recreational facilities and a hotel.
“I have visited the site along I-81. This strategic, gateway location to serve a five-state area is impressive,” Sneed said. “It is our wish to bring new tax revenue and jobs to Washington County and the Southwest Virginia region.
