New Hampshire to tax Keno games
Botch chambers of the New Hampshire Congress have approved the proposal to impose taxes on Keno games to fund full-day kindergarten.
US.- Keno games have been recently authorised in New Hampshire and the State Congress intends to benefit from its operation. Both chambers approved a proposal to impose taxes on them during a bipartisan vote on Thursday in order to fund full-day kindergarten.
As CalvinAyre reported, New Hampshire Union Leader explained that the bill only meeds Governor Chris Sununu’s sugnature in order to get final approval. Sununu will most likely sign it as he has made expanded kindergarten a signature policy issue.
Voting was quite clear in favor of the bill as the House of Representatives voted for it 251-111 and the Senate passed it as well by a 15-8 vote. The bill was mostly backed by the Republicans while the Democrats didn’t quite support it as they believed it doesn’t go far enough.
The state currently offers an allowance of US$1800 per student for kindergarten enrollment. According to the Democrats, that is only half of the adequacy grant of US$3600 for students in up to 12th grade and they wanted Keno to fully fund the other half. However, SB191 only provides a yearly subsidy of US$1100 per student.
“The investments made today will give New Hampshire’s children a strong foundation for tomorrow’s future. Full-day kindergarten is good for children and families, and a critical tool in retaining our future workforce,” Gov. Sununu said.
