Laid-off casino workers in Nevada picketed at the statehouse to demand the passing of a bill to have operators rehire them at pre-pandemic wages.

US.- Many casino workers that were laid off during the pandemic in Nevada are calling for lawmakers to pass legislation on their rehiring .

The segment’s union brought many workers together to picket at the Nevada statehouse and demand lawmakers pass a bill that requires gaming companies to rehire laid-off workers at pre-pandemic wages.

The economy has grown again. Why should we not have our jobs back when these places open up?” a worker said. “We put our time in and we were a family. Now they don’t care. They just throw us away to the curb,” questioned a worker during the picket.

However, opponents to the bill argue that it could bring about unnecessary litigation, which would be cointerproductive and hurt Nevada’s economy as it tries to recover.

“The bill would further damage Nevada’s recovery efforts by placing an arduous burden on employers through needless, time-consuming and counter-productive requirements that will significantly slow down rehiring and further delay bringing more Nevadans back to work,” Nevada Resort Association President Virginia Valentine said back in April to the Nevada Current.

Despite the workers protests, a “Right to return” Law has not been put up for a vote at any level of the Legislature.
