High Court delays poker dispute
The Gujarat High Court has adjourned to June 23 the petition filed by six poker clubs in regards of the legality of poker in the region.
India.- Six poker clubs filed a joint civil petition in Gujarat High Court to rebrand poker as a game of skill rather than gambling. However, the request, which would remove all doubt about the card game’s legality, has been adjourned by the Court to June 23.
As reported by Glaws, a single judge bench of the Court headed by Justice GR Udhwani decided to delay the request in order to gain more time for the state government to reply to the contentions raised by the poker clubs that made the petition.
At first, the petitioners had filed seperate requests. They claimed that police was harassing them and described the raids it conducted on their poker clubs. Nonetheless, said petitions were withdrawn and the poker clubs got together to file a joint civil petition after the Ahmedabad police commisioner’s office issued a letter in which they considered poker as a game of chance.
The businessmen were pressing for a provisional order to continue operating. However, the state government and police apparently wanted some more time to give a detailed reply to the clubs.
