Casino Ajax receives green light to expand

Despite the fact that its future remains in doubt, the casino received permission to expand its facility.

Canada.- The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) has decided that Casino Ajax can expand its facility to 3,700 gaming positions, significantly up from the current 800. Despite the ruling, it is still uncertain if the casino will operate in the future.

“Ajax has all the planning authority it asked for and the zoning bylaw was approved some time ago and appealed by the Durham Live people,” said Mayor Steve Parish. He said that while the planning approvals are in place, it is still not a gambling approval. “It gives us the green light for our site to exist. The jury is still out on what the government will do for a gaming site,” Parish added.

OMB adjudicator Justin Duncan said: “It is not the tribunal’s role to choose between two competing developments. The tribunal is not the final arbiter of which project is to be chosen to fulfil the expected expansion of gaming.”
