Canada: Caesars Windsor strike continues
Casino employees have rejected a second tentative contract agreement from the company and the strike continues.
Canada.- The Caesars Windsor casino strike continues as employees rejected a second tentative contract agreement last Friday. 53 per cent of the workers voted against the deal – which had been approved by both the union representing them and the casino management – and decided to continue asking for changes in wages and working conditions.
About 2,300 workers, including dealers, cooks, housekeepers and janitors, have been on strike since April 6th when they rejected a first tentative deal from Caesars. Since then, all hotel reservations and concerts have been cancelled through to the end of May, the company confirmed.
In a released statement, Caesars Windsor said the property will remain closed and there are no plans to return to the bargaining table at this time. This has local residents concerned about the city’s economy: “It’s scary. I hope the government eventually will come up and say enough is enough, you need to get back to work,” said Kim Thibert, who lives in the county.
Meanwhile, over the US-border, Detroit casinos have seen their revenues increase. MotorCity Casino Hotel and MGM Grand Detroit saw an increase in business and a jump in year-over-year gambling revenue of four per cent and three per cent respectively in the month of April (when the strike began), according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
