Australia.- New data suggest that online gambling continues to rise in Australia, despite the Covid-19 pandemic impacting the industry.
Analytics consulting firm AlphaBeta Australia partnered with credit bureau Illion to track the impact of Covid-19 on the Australian economy and has found that online gambling has risen.
Samples based on 250,000 Australian customers, with new data from the period of April 27 to May 3 was 142 per cent higher than a normal week before the pandemic hit.
The previous week’s figure was only 71 per cent higher.
Analysts are linking the rise to the doubling of unemployment benefits and a youth allowance, meaning that citizens in Australia have more time and money to gamble online.
Last week, a spokesperson for the Alliance for Gambling Reform said that the sharp rise in online gambling in the country ‘needs perspective’.
