AGA reiterates priorities for sports betting market

The association sent a letter to a senator in which it reinforces priorities for a successful market.

US.- The American Gaming Association (AGA) revealed that it sent a letter to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reinforcing AGA’s priorities for successful legal sports betting markets and its commitment to work with him and all stakeholders that are working against illegal markets.

“AGA has long been a leading advocate for eliminating the vast illegal sports betting market in the U.S., which was largely enabled by the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA),” the letter stated. “We believe this can best be achieved through law enforcement oversight and robust state regulation. AGA firmly believes that additional federal engagement is not warranted at this time.”

Late last month, the association had issued a statement against the senator’s proposal of a federal framework. The memo from Schumer said that leagues should provide all official data to sports books and have a say in deciding what bets are acceptable. Schumer also believes that the minimum age to place bets should be 21 in order to avoid advertising aimed at underage people, among other things.
