US.- Data published by GeoComply has shown that the number of sports betting transactions in the US has more than doubled from the start of the last NFL season. With more states authorising legal gambling, the number of wagers in the first four days of the football season has increased by 126 per cent.

The company’s data show that there were 58.2m geolocation transactions across 18 states and the District of Columbia from September 9 until 7pm Eastern Time on September 12. That compares to 25.8m in the same period last year.

Lindsay Slader, managing director of gaming for GeoComply said: “Preparing for this NFL season has been a process that began before the end of last season, and we expected high volumes, but what we have seen has surprised us nonetheless.”

The data showed that New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona and Illinois were the states with the highest volume of transactions. New Jersey reported the highest number with 12.5m wagers.

After Arizona’s sports betting went live last Thursday, more than 6.1m geolocation transactions took place in the state.

Slader said: “Arizona is showing that there is pent up demand for sports betting in the western part of the US. The state has catapulted near the top as the 4th largest state for transactions, in just its first weekend. We haven’t seen anything quite like it.”

Last month, the American Gaming Association (AGA) released research that predicts that a record 45.2m Americans (18 per cent of the population) plans to wager on the 2021 National Football League (NFL) season. That’s 36 per cent more than last year.
