Mississippi casino revenue up in 2018
Overall gambling revenue increased in 2018 thanks to a good performance from sports betting.
US.- According to figures released by the state gambling regulator from Mississippi, casino revenues increased during last year’s operations. Statewide revenue also increased with the revenue of sports betting’s performance.
Statewide revenue increased 1.7% in 2018 to US$2.1 billion, up approximately US$45 million from 2017. Despite the positive results, last year’s performance wasn’t near historical highs due to the legalisation of sports betting in near states, as well as inflation and increased competition in local casinos.
Through August to December, local casinos totalled US$15 million in revenue from sports betting operations. Local media reported that casino executives say that sports betting in Mississippi translates into more money lost on other casino games and more gamblers staying in casino hotels.
Moreover, the state collected US$169 million in casino taxes last year, approximately US$1 million coming from sports betting.
The 12 coastal casinos increased their revenues by 3% to US$1.23 billion, which represents the fifth consecutive year of growth. Winnings increased 6% in December to US$105 million.
