Maryland sports betting handle increases year-on-year in May
The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency has reported that wagers totalled $504.3m.
US.- Maryland’s eleven mobile sports wagering platforms and 12 retail sportsbooks generated a handle of $504.3m in May. That’s a rise of 16.9 per cent compared to the same month in 2024.
According to figures released by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA), $494.2m was spent online and $10.2m at retail sportsbooks. Players won $438.1m and the taxable win was $51.6m. Sports betting generated $7.7m in contributions to the state, up 10.8 per cent year-on-year.
For July 2024 through May 2025, sports wagering has contributed $79.7m to the state compared to $54.6m for the same period in 2024. The state’s share of sports wagering proceeds is directed to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programmes.
Last month, Maryland governor Wes Moore signed off on House Bill 352, which increases the state’s online sports betting tax rate from 15 to 20 per cent. The extra funds are intended to plug a forecast budget gap of $2.7m
Casinos in Maryland
Maryland’s six casinos generated $176.4m in gaming revenue in May, up 1.9 per cent compared to May 2024 and 8.5 per cent from April. The rise comes after decreases in March and April
The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Commission reported that MGM National Harbor generated $75.4m. It was followed by Live! Casino & Hotel, with $63.8m. Horseshoe Casino Baltimore generated $15.2m, Hollywood Casino Perryville $8.3m, Ocean Downs Casino $8.7m and Rocky Gap Casino $4.9m.
