Malta and Italy team up to tackle gambling irregularities

The Maltese authority is set to sign a collaboration agreement with Italian authorities to crack down on crime.

Malta.- Maltese Parliamentary Secretary Silvio Schembri said on Tuesday that the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) and Italian authorities are expected to sign an agreement to strengthen collaboration in order to tackle irregular activity in the gambling sector.

The parliamentary secretary revealed the news during the third annual KPMG Gaming eSummit, which featured the presence of approximately 300 delegates. He said that the partnership will contribute with Malta’s excellent reputation regarding measures to crack down on crime, Times of Malta informed.

Schembri said that the agreement allows both parties to further share intelligence information and will position them more strategically to detect irregular activity. He highlighted that Malta’s recently-enacted law has already put the MGA in a stronger position to tackle money laundering, fraud and other criminal activities.

“Malta, with its current gaming ecosystem and ‘Home of Gaming Excellence’ credentials, will provide the ideal landscape for esports athletes, businesses and tournaments to thrive,” said Schembri, who also added that the government is embracing new technologies in order to launch a framework for cryptocurrency and a strategy for eSports.
