Indiana bill banning sweepstakes casinos takes effect

HB 1052 has become law after receiving Governor Mike Braun’s signature.

US.- Indiana’s House Bill 1052 took effect on July 1 after receiving Governor Mike Braun’s signature. The new law prohibits online sweepstakes casinos that use dual-currency systems from operating in the state.

Co-sponsored by committee chair Rep. Ethan Manning, Rep. Peggy Mayfield, and Rep. Justin Moed, the legislation imposes a civil penalty of up to $100,000 on operators. The bill passed the House in early and Senate in February.

In May, Tennessee governor Bill Lee signed Senate Bill 2136, while Oklahoma has also banned online sweepstakes after the Legislature overrode Governor Kevin Stitt’s veto of Senate Bill 1589. Elsewhere, the Chicago City Council voted 33-15 to reject a proposal that would have banned sweepstakes machines in the city.
