Macau.- According to new information released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), Macau increased the number of visitors 2.4 percent year-on-year in September and reached 2.5 million arrivals. The number was a good sign before the Golden Week, which reported a slow start.
The number of Mainland China visitors grew 9.2 percent year-on-year during September operations and achieved 1.7 million. South Korean visitors also increased 10.6 percent, whilst Hong Kong and Taiwan reported a 14.3 and 5.8 percent fall respectively. Visitors from countries located in other continents, like the United States, Australia and the UK also reported decreases year-on-year.
Moreover, casinos in Macau extended a 14 month winning streak in September with revenue up 16.1 percent. The territory started the golden week period this weekend and is expected to increase visitor traffic. Monthly gambling revenue was US$2.66 billion in September, closer to the higher estimations that analysts reported last month, which were between 11 to 17 percent. Macau’s government is expected to release this week a 15-year plan that would increase tourism in order to rebrand Macau into a multi-day destination.
