Aus: gamblers using govt financial support
Multiple instances have been reported of people using government aid money to gamble online.
Australia.- Gamblers in Australia are using the government’s financial support program to fund their betting habits, according to reports.
The federal government’s early release program of superannuation savings was originally intended to help citizens ease the financial burden of Covid-19 losses.
But multiple instances have been reported of people using that money to gamble online.
An industry source told Australian Financial Review: “We saw someone take out the whole AU$10,000 amount on Thursday and by Monday they had none left. From their records, we could see they’d never been a gambler before.”
Last week, it was reported by AlphaBeta that there had been a sharp rise in online gambling in Australia since the pandemic hit the country and stay-at-home orders were announced.
