Superbet to pay out €30m after bug causes slot wins on every spin

Accounts were initially suspended after the slot malfunction.

Romania- The Romanian gambling operator Superbet has said that it will honour €30m in payouts to players following a slot machine malfunction. It had initially suspended the accounts affected while it investigated, but it now says it will make the payouts to protect its reputation.

According to Romanian news outlets, the issue occurred on Saturday with Playtech’s Fire Blaze Red Wizard slot. The game reportedly produced payouts on every spin for several hours due to a technical fault.

The glitch quickly gained traction across online gambling communities, prompting over 7,500 people to engage with the game and collectively win tens of millions of euros before Superbet identified the problem.

In response, the company temporarily suspended affected accounts initially, raising fears among players that it might invoke the industry-standard clause that invalidates gameplay during technical errors. However, Superbet has reportedly announced that all winnings will be paid in full. According to ProSport Romania, this will cost Superbet over €30m.

Superbet said in a statement: “We’ve built our reputation on paying out every win, no matter the size. We accept all bets and stakes—and we intend to keep it that way.”

The company said it took the decision to preserve customer trust and maintain its standing in Romania’s gaming sector at the expense of a substantial short-term loss.

Superbet is currently eyeing further global expansion following a €1.3bn refinancing agreement with its consortium of investors, Blackstone and several HPS Investment Partners-managed funds. It plans to use the funds to invest in its entry into Brazil, new technology and possible M&A activity. Sacha Dragic, who founded the company in 2008,  returned as co-CEO alongside Jimmy Maymann in September.

Superbet said it is now investigating the slot malfunction with its partners. Playtech has yet to issue a public response, but the issue can be expected to revive debate about accountability for software errors.
