New Nevada gaming tech standards on track for October 2027 implementation

The aim is to unify Nevada’s gaming technical standards in one place.

Key Takeaways

  • The Nevada Gaming Control Board announced 10 revised technical standards for gaming equipment and systems, proposed to take effect October 1, 2027. It will repost the revised documents for public comment through November 15, after incorporating changes requested by licensees.
  • The standards consolidate technical requirements from the Minimum Internal Control Standards (MICs) with policies, industry notices and clarifications from the past 15 years.

U.S.- The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) has revised its previously announced new technical standards covering gaming equipment and systems. Language has been tweaked following industry feedback, and the 10 standards have now been reposted for public comment. The intended implementation date remains October 1, 2027.

Presented by Technology Division Chief Jeremy Eberwein at Wednesday’s board meeting, the revised standards covering various areas of gaming technology. Three of them, standards 3, 5 and 6, are updated versions of existing text, respectively covering online slot systems and cashless wagering systems, cashless wagering kiosks and interactive gaming systems and associated equipment. Standards 7-13 are new.

  • Standard 7 covers general requirements
  • Standard 8 focuses on race and sports systems
  • Standard 9 on pari-mutuel systems
  • Standard 10 on keno
  • Standard 11 on bingo
  • Standard 12 addresses cashless wagering and wagering account systems
  • Standard 13 covers cage, credit, card game and table game systems

The overhaul seeks to make Nevada’s technical framework easier to navigate by bringing requirements currently spread across different regulatory documents into a more unified structure. At present, licensees and suppliers may need to consult the state’s Minimum Internal Control Standards (MICs), industry notices, policies and other guidance when determining the requirements applicable to gaming products.

The first versions of the standards were published earlier this year, but the NGCB revised the drafts after receiving feedback from licensees. The NGCB will repost the revised documents for public comment until November 15.

The NGCB recently announced that Judge Woodbury of the First Judicial District Court for the State of Nevada has granted its motion for a preliminary injunction against the prediction platform Polymarket. Chairman Mike Dreitzer welcomed the ruling and said the regulator would “continue to vigorously enforce Nevada law to safeguard gaming in our state.”
