MGM sues to protect its trademark

MGM Resorts filed a lawsuit against an online casino for trademark infringement and identity theft.

US.- MGM Resorts is suing the unnamed operator of LiveMGM.com for trademark infringement and cybersquatting as they accuse them of using the company’s trademarks for deliberately “impersonating MGM and trading off of the substantial fame goodwill and consumer recognition” of the corporation’s name.

According to the lawsuit filed in US District Court for the District of Nevada on Thursday, the Chinese language site pretends to be the real casino giant in order to “lure gamblers to gamble at its illicit website.” Web page’s home screen even has a false copyright notice at the bottom that reads “Copyright MGM Resorts International.”

MGM wants injunctive relief against the operator, and aims to receive the transfer of the domain name, in addition to compensatory and punitive damages, and attorneys’ fees and costs. There’s previous jurisprudence similar to this particular case as big casino companies are constantly in need of defending their intellectual property rights. Las Vegas Sands Corp won a similar lawsuit in 2015 against over 30 Chinese online gambling websites that each appropriated the company’s logo and pretended to be Sheldon Adelson’s business.
