Foreign visitors may be required to pay taxes for their casino winnings
The plan is to check which tourists have to pay taxes when they leave the country.
Japan.- The government and ruling coalition are making arrangements to create a system to withhold taxes from the winnings of visitors. The plan will require casino operators to give the information of their main movements.
The system that the authorities proposed would require to Japan’s three casino operators to keep records of purchases of each individual gambler’s purchase of chips upon entering the casino, amount of chips converted into cash when leaving, amount of chips purchased at the gambling tables and results of each game.
But this won’t be government’s responsibility. These records will be collected by each casino and they have to provide the information to each gambler.
The plan is to check which tourists have to pay taxes when they leave the country, but it depends on the treaty that Japan has with each country. For example, visitors from China o Thailand would pay taxes to Japanese authorities, while people from the United States and South Korea will be taxed by their country’s authority.
The ruling coalition wants to include this plan in their tax system reform outline to be compiled in December.
