Police in Hat Yai district have arrested 16 people for illegal gambling and breaching Covid-19 social distance measures.

Thailand.- Officers in Thailand have reported that 16 people were arrested district for illegal gambling during a raid at a townhouse in Hat Yai. Five men and 11 women were allegedly playing cards. During the raid, police seized five decks of cards and THB14,400 in cash.

Hat Yai district security chief Theeradet Janmanee, told the Bangkok Post that those arrested were also breaching social distance measures while playing inside an airconditioned room with no outside ventilation.

A week ago, five people were arrested after police raided an illegal gambling operation at a condominium in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district. According to officers, those arrested, aged between 25 to 28 years old, were operating a website for online gambling.

Thailand is debating the legalisation of casinos. However, in a poll carried out by the National Institute of Development Administration, 56.83 per cent of residents said they were against legalising gambling.
