Dr Wong Yew Choy tried to have the case thrown out of court but the Queensland Court of Appeal has dismissed his request.

Australia.- Star Entertainment’s case against billionaire Dr Wong Yew Choy will continue after the Queensland Court of Appeal dismissed the Singaporean billionaire request to have the case thrown out. In July 2018, the high roller attended the Gold Coast casino on a junket and lost a $40m cheque, which he allegedly cancelled on returning to his native Singapore.

Star filed a lawsuit in Singapore in 2019, but the case was dismissed by the Singapore International Commercial Court and by international Judge Jeremy Cooke. Star Entertainment then took the case to the Queensland Supreme Court, but Dr Wong disputed the court’s jurisdiction and argued that the proceedings were an abuse of process.

Wong’s attorneys said: “Star’s conduct has occasioned unjustifiable oppression to him, and it has brought the administration of justice into disrepute.”

However, the Queensland Court of Appeal has dismissed the argument against its jurisdiction and the case will continue next year.

According to local media reports, the Queensland Court of Appeal stated: “Wong should not have considered that his dispute with Star was at an end once the Singapore proceeding was dismissed.”
