SJM cancels New Year countdown show
The casino operator has followed the decision of the Macau Government, which has already cancelled the usual New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Macau.- Casino operator SJM has cancelled its Grand Lisboa New Year Countdown Show, which usually takes place on the resort’s outdoor piazza on December 31.
The traditional fireworks show was cancelled in accordance with the pandemic control efforts of the Macau SAR Government, which has also cancelled the city’s usual New Year’s Eve celebrations to avoid mass gatherings.
Grand Lisboa Hotel officials were expecting to reach close to 50 per cent occupancy in December.
Ongoing travel restrictions due to the pandemic have also raised questions about the full opening of the hotel Grand Lisboa Palace, scheduled for the first quarter of 2021.
Union workers have said construction is complete and the necessary permits were on their way, but the opening could be delayed due to the lack of visitors in Macau.
In August SJM, organised a large recruitment event to fill mainly positions in non-gaming areas at Grand Lisboa Palace. Over 2,000 applicants attended.
