Singapore police warn of Facebook Live lottery and scratch card scams
Authorities issued a public warning after identifying dozens of cases involving fraudulent lottery and scratch card promotions on Facebook Live.
Singapore.- The Singapore Police Force has warned the public about a rise in scams involving lottery tickets and scratch cards promoted through Facebook Live streams.
In an advisory issued on June 15, the force said fraudsters have been using livestreams on the social media platform to market purported lottery products and scratch cards offering cash prizes. After making a purchase, victims are informed that they have won a prize. Scammers then request additional payments to release the winnings, citing reasons such as administrative or processing fees. Authorities recorded at least 33 cases between May 20 and June 15.
The Singapore Police Force urged consumers to verify the identity of sellers before transferring funds and to remain cautious of offers that promise large prizes in exchange for additional payments.
The agency also advised members of the public to seek assistance from authorities, relatives or friends when in doubt and to report suspicious transactions to their financial institutions immediately.
