Police in Jagna town in Bohol province have arrested a town councillor and eight other people for alleged involvement in illegal gambling activities.

The Philippines.- Police have arrested a town councillor and eight others while playing mahjong in Jagannath, Bohol. Police said the suspects included Pacheco Llido Rances, a resident of Barangay Poblacion and a town councillor who is seeking re-election in May.

The other suspects were aged between 47 to 70 years old. During the raid, police seized an undetermined amount of bet money and gambling paraphernalia.

According to Police Major Marcos Lopez, chief of Jagna police, all types of gambling remain banned since the town has not been granting permits for gambling due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He stressed that Jagna police take a hard line on all forms of illegal activities in the town.

Philippines: 80 arrested over illegal cockfighting

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reported that 80 people were arrested in an intensified drive against cockfighting operations in the provinces of Samar, Eastern Samar, and Northern Samar over the weekend. The authorities confiscated cockfighting paraphernalia, such as gaffs, bet money and recovered live and dead cocks.

At a raid in Dagami, Leyte 52 men were arrested in a cockfighting arena in the town’s Casamada East village, according to Colonel Major Bella Rentuaya, spokesperson of the PNP regional office.
