Zimbabwe Gaming Board sounds alarm on illegal online gambling

Regulators in Zimbabwe overwhelmed as digital betting boom fuels rise in illegal platforms and financial crime fears.

Zimbabwe.- Zimbabwe’s online gambling scene is spiralling out of control, with the Lotteries and Gaming Board issuing a stark warning over the rise of illegal online betting, a trend it directly links to the country’s deepening economic crisis and outdated regulatory tools.

In a report delivered to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Defence, Home Affairs, Security Services and War Veterans Affairs this week, the board painted a troubling picture of a nation struggling to keep pace with the digital transformation of gambling.

“The report attributed the rise in illegal online gambling to technological advancements, increased accessibility, and the borderless nature of online activities, which pose regulatory enforcement challenges,” a government source revealed, according to Zimeye.net.

Quick-money ventures

With Zimbabwe’s economic climate pushing more citizens towards quick-money ventures and risky wagers, illegal online betting platforms have mushroomed across the digital space. The board admitted it’s vastly under-resourced to keep up with the surge.

“The board also cited inadequate personnel as a hindrance to closing illegal gambling shops sprouting across the country,” the source added.

But it’s not just underground operations drawing concern. The board highlighted a dramatic spike in both foreign and local investment in gambling operations, legal and otherwise. This has fuelled a dense clustering of gambling outlets, prompting officials to clamp down with stricter licensing caps and more thorough vetting of operators.

In a further twist, the report raised red flags over the potential use of gambling platforms as conduits for illicit financial activity.

In response, the board has rolled out tighter monitoring and more aggressive regulatory frameworks to deter money laundering and other financial crimes.

With enforcement tools lagging behind rapidly advancing tech and a growing appetite for high-risk online play, Zimbabwe’s gambling watchdog is sounding the alarm: the system is being outpaced, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
