SunBet Cares awards bursaries to 34 North-West University students

The operator said the programme aims to help students overcome financial barriers to higher education and focus on their studies.

South Africa.- Betting operator SunBet has awarded bursaries to 34 North-West University (NWU) students through its SunBet Cares initiative, covering expenses including tuition, accommodation, study materials and living costs.

The bursaries were handed over during a launch event at NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus on September 1, where the selected students received assistance towards essential academic and basic needs.

The initiative, delivered in partnership with Fundi and the Department of Education, forms part of SunBet’s community investment activities in the North West. The operator said the programme aims to help students overcome financial barriers to higher education and focus on their studies.

The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) attended the handover as the provincial gambling regulator. The board has previously highlighted the importance of licensed gambling operators contributing to communities in which they operate.

NWGB acting CEO Boitumelo Qalinge congratulated the beneficiaries and encouraged them to use the opportunity to create a wider impact beyond their individual studies.

He said: “This opportunity is not only an investment in your education, but in your families, communities and the future of our country. Study hard, remain focused and, when you succeed, pay it forward by creating opportunities for others.”

The regulator also praised SunBet, Fundi and NWU for their roles in delivering the bursary initiative, and encouraged further collaboration on programmes that benefit young people.
