Winter loadshedding could deal a blow to online casino gaming in South Africa

South Africa braces for power cuts this winter, threatening not just homes and businesses, but the booming world of mobile gaming.

South Africa- As winter draws closer in South Africa, the country may once again be plunged into the familiar darkness of loadshedding. The Minerals Council has sounded the alarm, warning that Eskom’s power grid is hanging by a thread, with supply already under pressure, and the Energy Availability Factor (EAF) languishing at a weak 57.5 per cent.

In its first quarter 2025 electricity update, the council painted a grim picture: from 7 to 10 March alone, the system lost 2,700mw in generation capacity. And the pain didn’t stop there. One March 19, another round of loadshedding followed the sudden failure of five generating units.

But even if the lights stay on, the situation is already dimming prospects for one of the country’s most resilient sectors – online casino gaming.

With the bulk of South Africa’s players using mobile devices to place their bets, frequent and unpredictable power cuts threaten to disrupt gameplay, delay withdrawals, and sever live dealer sessions mid-spin. For users without uninterrupted data or battery backups, a spinning roulette wheel could become a spinning load icon.

Players rely on stable connectivity to enjoy seamless casino experiences. A sudden blackout during a high-stakes round can be more than frustrating, it can cost money.

Beyond user experience, operators may face technical headaches too. Delayed payouts, failed game loads, and increased customer support queries are likely as outages rolls across the country. And while some platforms may introduce offline gaming options or adaptive tech, for many, power remains a dealbreaker.

For now, Eskom is trying to hold the line. Loadshedding is suspended, but the grid remains “constrained” due to overcast conditions and high maintenance. With snow already falling over the Drakensberg this past week, winter is coming sooner than we think.
