NLA supports vulnerable communities in Southeastern Liberia
The NLA plans to revive the lotto to generate more funds for the disabled community.
Liberia.- The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has marked the second edition of its philanthropic initiative by donating food and essential items to vulnerable populations in Liberia’s southeastern counties, including Maryland, Sinoe, Grand Gedeh, Grand Kru and River Gee.
The items were distributed at the handover ceremony organised by the NLA in Harper, Maryland County. The event was attended by various stakeholders, including local leaders, disability community members and NLA officials from Monrovia.
While giving the opening address, Mayor Abraham B. Jackson of Harper City thanked the NLA for consistently supporting Liberia’s disadvantaged communities. He said: “With all the goodwill brought to our people, I hope that this initiative continues and is not just a one-time occurrence.”
The NLA’s assistant director of welfare, Helena Dior, said the donation emphasises the organisation’s commitment to caring for and protecting Liberia’s less privileged citizens. The gesture builds on the first initiative in 2023 when the NLA shared food and vital items with orphans, hospitals, safe homes and those with disabilities.
Dior also noted that the initiatives are backed by the president and vice president, reinforcing the government’s support for its vulnerable citizens.
Christian Cooper, NLA’s deputy director general, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting marginalised communities. He said: “President Boakai cares deeply for the disabled community, and what we are doing today is just the start. We will continue to bring sustainable support to your lives.”
Cooper also confirmed that the NLA is planning to revive the lotto to create a steady funding stream for the disabled community.
Representing the National Commission on Disability, Oliver S.T. Baryoueh praised the NLA for its continued assistance. He said that the recent aid had made a lasting impact on the disabled community and appealed for it to continue.
Honourable Henry Cole, Maryland County superintendent, thanked the lottery authority for their generosity. He added that Maryland County is also investing in its disabled community through budget allocations for support services and education.
