Nigerians join $575K crypto bet on Jesus’ 2025 return
Crypto gamblers, prophecy theorists and financial strategists collide in a surreal end-times market where faith meets futures trading.
Nigeria.- In a bizarre intersection of faith, finance and crypto-fuelled speculation, more than $575,000 has been wagered on whether Jesus Christ will return to Earth by December 31, 2025. This was reported on Legit Online News Nigeria.
The bet is hosted by Polymarket, a New York-based cryptocurrency prediction platform, where real money rides on real-world events, including, now, the second coming of Jesus.
As of 6 June 2025, the site shows $575,721 staked on this theological longshot. A staggering 97.2 per cent of the market is backing ‘No’ on the Polymarket website, with just 2.8 per cent betting that Christ will indeed make his long-awaited return this year.
That scepticism is baked into the odds: a “Yes” share currently trades for just $0.03, while a “No” share costs $0.97. If Jesus appears, Yes shares rise in value to $1 each, and No shares become worthless. If not, the No camp cashes in, and Yes believers are left with nothing but faith.
Prophecy meets profit play
People are putting money on a prophecy that even most believers wouldn’t expect to be confirmed via blockchain.
Some punters cite the Millennial Day Theory, a theological interpretation suggesting Jesus will return 6,000 years after the creation of humanity to usher in a thousand-year reign of peace. But science throws a wet blanket on that prophecy, as Homo sapiens have walked the Earth for around 300,000 years, not six.
Still, that hasn’t stopped a fringe group of spiritual speculators, or savvy financial opportunists, from placing bets.
Eric Neyman, who runs the Unexpected Values blog, suspects there’s more strategy than scripture behind the move.
He suggests that Yes bettors may not genuinely believe the second coming will occur, but rather anticipate that No investors will sell their shares at a loss to free up funds for other, more lucrative bets.
It is a play that taps into the ‘Time Value of Money’ theory, the idea that cash in hand today is worth more than promises of tomorrow. With Polymarket’s liquidity and real-time trading, Yes bettors may see profit in exploiting short-term selloffs, not waiting for a trumpet blasting apocalypse.
Whether it is prophecy or profit driving this divine wager, one thing is certain and that is betting on the end times has never been so literal, or so lucrative.
