Liberia’s National Lottery Authority rejects corruption allegations against Director Peter Solo
The authority has pushed back against claims of nepotism, misuse of funds and staff intimidation, insisting operations remain transparent and lawful.
Liberia.- The Liberia National Lottery Authority (NLA) has hit back at a wave of recent allegations circulating in the country’s media, which accuse Director General Hon. Peter Solo of nepotism, corruption, staff intimidation and misuse of public funds. The Authority has firmly rejected these accusations, describing them as “allegations intended to tarnish the hard-earned reputation of the institution and Solo.”
Solo was appointed on July 24, 2025, to lead the NLA, which oversees country’s gaming and gambling sector. The allegations have been detailed in the Liberian media, with reports highlighting specific claims against Solo.
A Knews Online Liberia report, dated September 5, states: “Solo has been accused of hiring more than 50 employees without board approval, placing his son in a supervisory role with a $600 salary and withdrawing $5,000 from NLA funds for personal use.” Reports also state that employees were intimidated, unfairly dismissed or demoted.
The NLA, however, categorically rejected each of these claims in a statement: “At no time has the Authority engaged in favouritism, political interference or family-based considerations in its employment or decision-making processes. All appointments and promotions are conducted in strict accordance with established policies and legal procedures; no family-based favouritism has occurred.”
The statement added: “The Authority rejects any claims of personal use of funds; all financial transactions are conducted transparently and in line with the laws of the Republic of Liberia. Under Director General Solo’s leadership, no employee has been dismissed or demoted, and all staff are treated fairly and equally in accordance with internal policies.”
NLA stands firm on reform and integrity
The Authority said its leadership has been working to professionalise the workplace, formalising the status of long-serving volunteers and promoting qualified staff through proper channels.
As the body tasked with managing Liberia’s gambling industry, the NLA emphasised its focus on national development, arguing that its mandate is to raise much-needed revenue for the country while safeguarding the credibility of gaming activities.
Amid growing public attention, the Authority is standing its ground, positioning itself as a victim of unfounded attacks designed to destabilise confidence in the gaming regulator.
The NLA said it assured the Liberian people of its unwavering dedication to professionalism, service and national interest.
