South Africa- Betway Africa has confirmed a major leadership transition, with longtime CEO Laurence Michel stepping into the role of Chairman after two decades at the company’s helm. The move signals a renewed focus on strategic governance, regional growth and innovation across Betway’s operations in Africa, including South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya.
Michel’s 20-year tenure as CEO saw Betway expand into multiple African markets, building a strong regulatory footprint while cementing a market-leading brand identity known for reliability and player engagement.
His leadership was defined by strategic sponsorships, responsible gaming initiatives and a commitment to local market adaptation, ensuring the operator met the needs of both regulators and players.
Setting out his priorities for the role, Michel shared his thoughts in a LinkedIn post, describing the transition as both a milestone and a moment of renewed focus.
Michel said: “As Chairman, I remain fully committed to driving our long-term growth and innovation. In this new capacity, my focus will include navigating the evolving regulatory landscape during this pivotal period for the South African gambling sector, while advancing key strategic initiatives that position us for sustainable success.”
New chapter begins
