Kenya’s horse racing season kicks off with Directors’ Million Shilling Stakes
Ngong Racecourse hosts season opener as punters gear up for thrilling high-stakes action.
Kenya.- Kenya’s horse racing season officially launches on September 7 with the Directors’ Million Shilling Stakes at Ngong Racecourse, signalling the start of the 2025 racing calendar. The annual event is one of the country’s most anticipated racing spectacles and a key date for bettors, owners and racing enthusiasts.
For punters, the Million Shilling Stakes represents one of the biggest wagering opportunities of the year, with odds, form sheets and betting strategies driving as much excitement as the race itself.
The Jockey Club of Kenya, which operates the country’s only thoroughbred track, confirmed that the event will usher in months of fierce competition. Authorities at Ngong Racecourse, situated in the popular city of Nairobi, promised a full day of spectacle both on and off the turf.
The Ngong Racecourse said in a statement: “The first race day of the season is on Sunday, 7 September, 2025 between 12 and 4:30 PM. Delight in an afternoon at the horse races featuring delectable food and drink, Nairobi’s best fashion, a curated pop-up market and family-friendly entertainment.”

Beyond the racing, the event has become a major social occasion, combining high fashion, gourmet food, live music and family-friendly activities. Attendees can also stay on for “The Afterparty,” a post-race celebration that has become a tradition at the venue.
The Directors’ Million Shilling Stakes is more than a curtain-raiser. It sets the tone for the season, highlighting Kenya’s growing horse racing and betting culture. With thousands expected to place wagers, the race reaffirms the strong connection between sport, spectacle and gambling in the country.
As the season begins, all eyes will be on Ngong Racecourse, where speed, strategy and stakes meet in one of East Africa’s premier horse racing events.
