Botswana regulator highlights gambling’s role in tourism growth at HATAB conference
Gambling Authority CEO Moruntshi Kemorwale told delegates that a regulated gambling sector can support tourism growth by strengthening investor confidence.
Botswana.- The Gambling Authority of Botswana has participated in the Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana (HATAB)’s annual conference held in Maun on Thursday, April 23, positioning gambling regulation as a key component of sustainable tourism development and economic growth.
Speaking during the conference, Gambling Authority CEO Moruntshi Kemorwale said the gambling and hospitality industries are increasingly interconnected through casino operations linked to hotels and tourism developments across Botswana.
Kemorwale told delegates that a regulated gambling sector can support tourism growth by strengthening investor confidence and improving oversight in entertainment-related businesses. He said the Authority’s role includes ensuring that gambling operations within hospitality establishments comply with regulatory standards while contributing to the tourism economy.
The conference, organised by the Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana, brought together policymakers, tourism operators, financiers and business leaders under the theme “Redefining Tourism Strategies to Reshape the Botswana Tourism Landscape”. The event was opened by Botswana’s Minister of Environment and Tourism, Wynter Boipuso Mmolotsi.
Discussions at the event centred on tourism investment, sector competitiveness and diversification opportunities for Botswana’s visitor economy.
The Authority’s participation reflects growing attention on how casino operations and regulated gaming activities fit into hospitality and tourism planning. The regulator used the platform to promote responsible gambling awareness among delegates visiting its exhibition stand. Officials from the Authority also engaged participants on player protection measures and the role of regulation in reducing gambling-related harm.
The regulator has in recent months increased its participation in public industry forums as it pushes for stronger compliance standards and greater public awareness around responsible gambling practices.
