African gaming shines globally with Afrime Studios’ Unyverse

Action-packed RPG blends Afrofuturistic worlds, rich storytelling and inclusive character design, showcasing African culture on the global stage.

Cameroon.- African-inspired gaming is stepping confidently onto the world stage with Unyverse, the latest action role-playing game from Afrime Studios, a U.S.-based developer. The game immerses players as “D’Zola Warriors” in a universe where every choice can shift alliances, shape factions and change the course of the story, all within vividly crafted African-inspired landscapes and aesthetics.

Unyverse delivers more than just a narrative experience. Its combat is fluid and intense, featuring real-time melee battles (instant, up-close combat) and combo chains (rapid sequences of attacks for extra impact) that keep every encounter exciting.

Beyond fighting, the game offers open-world exploration, side quests and resource gathering, giving players countless ways to engage with its rich world. Early previews highlight sweeping cityscapes and remote outposts inspired by African aesthetics.

Custom characters, cultural pride

One of Unyverse’s most notable features is its character customisation. Players can create avatars with a broad range of skin tones, afro-textured hairstyles and facial features, reflecting the game’s focus on representation. The studio said: “Representation matters and is a powerful anchor for a whole new Unyverse of storytelling.”

As a majority black-owned developer, Afrime Studios is dedicated to highlighting African stories and culture, even while operating from the United States. The studio’s mission, as one report notes, is to “tell their story their way”, a goal that shines through in Unyverse’s world design, characters and narrative depth.

Unveiled at the 2025 PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted, the game impressed audiences with both its visuals and its cultural authenticity. A demo is already available on Steam, giving players an early look, while the full game is scheduled for release in 2027.

Africa’s gaming industry is also booming, with vibrant studios across Cameroon, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya driving growth and showing that African developers are increasingly making their mark on the global stage.

For the continent’s gaming industry, Unyverse is more than just a game. It demonstrates that African-inspired stories can resonate globally while showcasing the creativity and cultural richness of the continent.
