Virginia sports betting handle declines in May

The handle decreased 2.3 per cent from the same month in 2025.

US.- The Virginia Lottery has released its report on sports wagering activity for May. The handle was $581.3m, down 2.3 per cent year-on-year and down from $613.9m in April.

According to the report, adjusted gross revenue (AGR) was $63.3m: $62.9m online and $439,556 via retail activity. Virginia bettors won $513.7m, leaving a combined 11.64 per cent operator win percentage. Ten operators reported net positive AGR, leading to $9.5m in tax payments.

State law places a 15 per cent tax on sports betting based on each permit holder’s AGR: 97.5 per cent goes to the state’s General Fund and 2.5 per cent to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund administered by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.

Virginia’s five licensed casinos reported combined revenue of $108.4m in May, up 26.9 per cent year-on-year. Slots generated $79.6m of the total and table games $28.8m. The state collected $19.5m in taxes paid to the Gaming Proceeds Fund.
