Swedish gambling regulator updates self-exclusion rules for operators
Spelinspektionen has also confirmed the implementation of the new expanded ban on gambling with credit.
Sweden.- The Swedish gambling regulator Spelinspektionen has announced a new regulation on how its licensees must carry out checks against Sweden’s national gambling self-exclusion register, Spelpaus.se. The regulation applies to licensees who are required to register their players under Chapter 12, Section 1 of the Gambling Act (2018:1138).
According to the new regulation, licensees must use their unique login details assigned by the regulator when checking players against Spelpaus.se. They must also perform the check against the application programming interface (API) that corresponds to the purpose of the check.
The new regulation also clarifies that a check is completed when it shows whether the person is suspended from gambling or not.
The new regulation will enter into force on August 1, 2026 .
Meanwhile, Sweden’s expanded gambling credit ban will come into effect tomorrow (May 1). The ban, introduced through an amendment to the 2018 Gambling Act, aims to prevent people who gamble for money from becoming indebted.
The extended credit ban means that licensees and gaming agents must not allow gambling being financed with credit. They must also take appropriate measures to prevent it from happening. The provision applies to all forms of gaming that require a license and regardless of how the game is provided.
