Google to ban prediction market extensions from Chrome Web Store
Google will prohibit browser extensions that facilitate or promote real-money prediction markets.
US.- Google has announced that it will prohibit browser extensions that facilitate or promote real-money prediction markets from the Chrome Web Store. The ban will take effect on August 1.
The updated Developer Program Policies are expected to affect extensions linked to platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket. The tools typically display real-time contract prices, send alerts or simplify order placement while users browse. Simulated products that offer no cash prizes may remain available if they clearly state that users cannot win real money.
The statement reads: “We are expanding our language to explicitly include predictive markets as prohibited products. Extensions that facilitate or enable real-money transactions on predictive outcomes are not allowed. Building and maintaining user trust is paramount. By implementing stricter data collection baselines and clarifying boundaries around prediction markets and AI safety, we ensure that the Chrome Web Store remains an honest, useful, and secure platform.”
Google is also tightening data rules. Extensions may collect only the information required for their core function. Developers must disclose what data is gathered, why it is used, whether it is shared and how long it is retained. Any later changes to data practices must be communicated directly to users.
The update comes as prediction markets face increased regulatory scrutiny in the United States and elsewhere over whether event contracts should be treated as financial instruments or gambling products. In November 2025, Google Finance began displaying odds from Kalshi and Polymarket alongside traditional market data. The new policy does not affect that integration.
