Swedish gambling regulator names Johan Röhr as acting director general

Röhr will step up when Camilla Rosenberg leaves the regulator.

Sweden.- The Swedish gambling regulator Spelinspektionen has named an acting director general following the news that Camilla Rosenberg will step down to take up another position. Johan Röhr will lead the regulator on an interim basis following Rosenberg’s departure on November 1 until a new director general is appointed.

Röhr is currently head of the legal department at Spelinspektionen. Before joining the gambling regulator, he worked in the Swedish justice system, including at the Court of Appeal in Stockholm.

Claes Norgren, chairman of Spelinspektionen’s board, said: “Johan Röhr has extensive experience of the business and will ensure continuity in the management. Operations will continue as planned and at an undiminished pace while waiting for a new director general to be appointed.”

Rosenberg is leaving Spelinspektionen to take up a post as director of the Swedish Real Estate Inspectorate. She has led the gambling regulator since 2017 and through the first six years of regulated online gambling in Sweden. The market was opened in 2019, which is when Spelinspektionen was given its current name.

Since then, she has overseen further initiatives such as the introduction of gaming supplier licences in 2023, the introduction of deposit limits during the Covid-19 pandemic and the addition of new powers for the regulator to tackle unlicensed gambling, including the ability to demand information from payment providers.

New self-exclusion regulations

Meanwhile, the regulator has opened a consultation on plans to introduce new regulations for the Swedish national gambling self-exclusion register, Spelpaus.se. The new rules will apply to all licensees who register players in accordance with the Gambling Act.

Licensees will have to use specific connection details (Actor ID and API Key) and the correct API must be used depending on the purpose of the control.

Spelinspektionen said the purpose of the chance is to clarify the routines and strengthen the protection for those players who have chosen to self-isolate.Comments on the proposal can be submitted up until September 24

In other news, the regulator has banned two more operators from targeting gambling at Swedish customers. The companies affected are Bitx Operations N.V. and Ryker B.V.
