PEZA ban won’t affect Pagcor

After PEZA’s decision to prohibit online gaming operations in its accredited buildings, a source said that it won’t affect Pagcor.

Philippines.- A source close to the situation specified that the decision from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) to ban online gaming operations in its buildings will not affect Pagcor licensees, as AGBrief reported.

Charito Plaza, PEZA Director General, said to the media last month that the board of directors made the decision to ban online gambling activities at their buildings, even if they’re related to technical support. Ms. Plaza has been in the position since last fall and was one of the authors of the Philippines’ Special Economic Zones Law, under which the agency had been established. PEZA Director General explained that the amount of online gambling operations in Metro Manila is over 100 and that those are mostly based in agency’s accredited buildings.

Earlier this month, PAGCOR released a Special Class of BPOs (business process outsourcing companies) in order to comply with PEZA’s regulation. “Since PEZA board will not allow online gaming, they (building owners) should stop allowing the lessee to occupy the accredited buildings. We do not want to ruin the image of the legitimate BPOs locating in our sites,” said the official. A statement is expected to be released before June.
