New York sets new US record in first month of sports betting

New York’s sports betting handle hit $1.6bn in the three weeks that operations were live in January.

US.- The New York State Gaming Commission has reported that the state´s online sports betting players spent $1.6bn from launch on January 8 until the end of the month, marking a record for the largest betting volume in a single month of any state in the US.

New York surpassed the previous one-month record set in October when New Jersey reported $1.3bn in sports wagers. New Jersey was also the first state in the US to pass the $1bn mark for monthly handle. The previous record for the highest opening sports betting handle was set by Arizona.

Last week, the New York State Gaming Commission reported that players spent $1.18bn from launch on January 8 until the end of the second full week of regulated sports betting on January 23. The regulator reported that gross gaming revenue for the period reached $91.4m. During the final week of January, players spent $449m on sports bets. 

In the first week after New York launched sports betting, 1.2m accounts were created across the five sportsbooks in the state, with 878,000 unique players. That’s more than New Jersey and Pennsylvania combined in their first weeks of betting.

GeoComply revealed that only 9.3 per cent of New York players placed bets previously in New Jersey, with 87.8 per cent of players being brand new to regulated online sports betting.
