New York City Council rejects Bally’s Bronx casino rezoning proposal
The City Council has denied zoning changes needed to move forward with the company’s project.
US.- New York City Council has voted to reject the land-use changes required to allow Bally’s Bronx casino plans in a move likely to spell the end of the $4bn proposal.
The company had applied for one of the three casino licences up for grabs in the state. It proposed Bally’s Corporation had proposed a complex that would include a 500,000-square-foot gaming floor, a 500-room hotel with a spa and meeting space, shops and a 2,000-seat event centre at a location next to the Trump Organization’s public golf course at Ferry Point in the East Bronx. But lawmakers voted 29-9, with 4 abstentions, to disapprove the request.
Republican councilwoman Kristy Marmorato, who opposed the project, said: “If I make a promise to my community, I follow through. We won’t win every battle, but we will always fight for what’s right.”
She added: “Today’s outcome proves that when we stand united – across party lines and with our constituents – we win.”
