Mississippi’s sports betting handle rises December
Although Mississippi’s sports betting handle rose 1.6 per cent from November to December 2020, revenues fell.
US.- Mississippi’s sports betting handle showed a slight increase month-on-month in December according to the state’s regulator.
The Mississippi Gambling Commission reported a handle of $55.3m, up 1.6 per cent from November’s $54.4m and up 12.7 per cent from $49m in December 2019.
But despite a higher handle, revenues dropped 4.3 per cent month-on-month, from $8.1m in November to $7.76m in December 2020.
The state’s coastal casinos were the biggest drivers of sports betting, accounting for $37.6m of the total handle and $4.9m of revenue.
At present, sports betting is only permitted in person at one of the state’s casinos, although state lawmakers are currently considering a bill that would allow online wagering.
Republican State Senator Scott DeLano’s Senate Bill 2396 would allow land-based operators to launch online sportsbooks. The bill is currently with the Senate Committee on Gaming.
Meanwhile a casino project proposed by Ray Wooldridge, the former owner of the New Orleans Hornets NBA team, was rejected by the Mississippi Supreme Court.
