US.- The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has reported that Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor generated $97m in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in November. That’s a 5.6 per cent increase year-on-year and a 4 per cent decrease from October 2022’s total of $97m.

Encore reported GGR of $59.4m, MGM Springfield $22m and Plainridge Park $11.3m. Together, Massachusetts’ three casinos generated $25.9m in tax revenue in November. Encore Boston Harbor contributed $14.8m, MGM Springfield $5.5m and Plainridge $5.5m.

PPC, a category 2 slots facility, is taxed on 49 per cent of GGR. Of that total, 82 per cent is paid to Local Aid and 18 per cent to the Race Horse Development Fund.  MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor, category 1 resort casinos, are taxed on 25 per cent of GGR. The funds are allocated to several specific state funds as determined by the gaming statute.

To date, the Commonwealth has collected approximately $1.261bn in taxes and assessments from PPC, MGM and Encore since the respective openings of each gaming facility. 

Sports betting in Massachusetts

A total of 15 sports betting operator applications were submitted to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) by November 21 deadline. Each applicant has also submitted the $200,000 application fee.

In-person sports betting is to start in January, with online betting to follow in early March. Encore Boston Harbour is the first facility in Massachusetts to receive a sports betting operator licence.
