Italy’s Lega Serie A to open bidding for betting and data rights

Eight packages are up for the taking including data rights for domestic and international betting.

Italy.- Lega Serie A has confirmed plans to open a Request for Proposals (RFP) covering betting and data rights for top-tier football in Italy. It will launch a tender for rights involving the Serie A Championship, Coppa Italia Frecciarossa and EA Sports Supercup for four season, from 2025/26 to 2028/29.

Eight packages are up for the taking, and those interested have been invited to submit bids by email. Package A offers the most complete international coverage, with streaming, match data and coach data for betting use outside of Italy. Package B focuses on domestic betting data rights.

Package C covers media data rights, D covers sports betting tracking data, E media tracking data and F covers three combinations of the other packages.

Serie A is popular in Europe both in terms of viewership and betting. Between three and six million people watch each weekend in Italy, mainly via DAZN. In the US, viewership reportedly rose by 50 per cent in the past season. Stats Perform previously had rights for 2024/25 to 2028/29 term but pulled out early this year, resulting in a legal dispute.

Meanwhile, Italy’s customs and monopolies agency ADM recently closed the window for new sports betting licences in Italy and is expected to decide on winning applicants over the summer. A steep increase in the licence fee to €7m is likely to significantly reduce the number of players on the market, with big operators expected to dominate.

It’s expected that around 50 operators will have applied and that around 30 licences will be granted. That compares to 93 applications and 81 licences granted in the last round of sports betting licences in 2018
