iGaming Ontario reports record wagers in August

The regulated online betting and gaming market generated CA$8.14bn in wagers in August.

Canada.- iGaming Ontario has reported that Ontario’s regulated online betting and gaming market generated CA$8.14bn (US$5.85bn) in wagers and CA$334.8m (US$240.73m) in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (NAGGR) in August. The figures represent year-on-year increases of 34.6 per cent and 40.5 per cent, respectively.

Casino wagers were CA$7.2bn (US$5.18bn), accounting for 89 per cent of the market in terms of turnover and 80 per cent of total revenue. The figure was up 7 per cent sequentially and 37.7 per cent in year-on-year terms. Casino gaming revenue totalled CA$267.8m (US$192.51m), up 6 per cent sequentially and 44.4 per cent in year-on-year terms.

Betting wagers were CA$765m (US$549.92m), a 15.2 per cent increase in year-on-year terms. Compared to the previous month, the figure was up 11 per cent. Betting revenue was CA$60.2m (US$43.27m). That’s an increase of 28.4 per cent in year-on-year terms and of 14 per cent sequentially.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) poker wagers were CA$151m (US$108.55m), a 9 per cent increase sequentially, while revenue reached CA$6.8m (US$4.89m), up 15 per cent compared to July.

In the three and a half years since the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) began regulating gambling in Ontario, the market only had higher GGR once, CA$338m (US$242.99m) in May of this year.

iGaming Ontario names Joseph Hillier as new president and CEO

iGaming Ontario’s board of directors recently appointed Joseph Hillier as president and chief executive officer, effective September 8. Since Martha Otton’s retirement, David Smith has served as interim in the role.

iGaming Ontario said: “The board of directors looks forward to supporting Joseph as he leads iGaming Ontario to build on Ontario’s igaming market success and deliver on key priorities including an anti-money laundering system for operators, and a centralized self-exclusion platform for Ontarians.”
